TWENTY-EIGHT:
VIOLET
To say Johnno isnât too happy with me would be an understatement. Weâre on the road again, and heâs gripping the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles are white. I donât think heâs ever been this angry with me.
âYou could have killed yourself.â His tone is a low growl. Wolf Black. Black Wolf.
I flip the sun visor down. âBut I didnât. Thatâs why I asked you to take care of me. Thank you.â
âWell, donât ask me to do that ever again, because I wonât. Weâve wasted a whole day.â
I grit my teeth. âIt wasnât a waste.â
âYeah? What can you do now that you couldnât before?â We jolt over a rut. My head feels as though itâs going to split open, but I donât want to admit to my L25 hangover, or whatever you call it when you come off an acid trip.
âI heard ⦠stuff.â I prod the scab that has formed on the split in my lip.
âTheyâre called auditory hallucinations. Like when you have schizophrenia.â
âThere you go again, as patronising as ever.â
Johnnoâs voice rises. âNo, Violet, Iâm being realistic. In case you havenât noticed, all weâve done for the last few days is drive around in circles.â
Swallowing a scream of frustration, I fling open the passenger door, waiting until Johnno slows before leaping into the dirt. Johnno slams on the brakes and jumps out after me.
âTrying to kill yourself again?â
âNo. Iâm not.â
âCould have fooled me. Iâm not going to keep rescuing you every time you do something stupid.â His thoughts are so loud. Javier virus. L25. And then, But it wasnât her fault she got attacked yesterday, it was all mine. A stricken expression crosses his face.
I stamp my foot. âYou rescuing me? If it werenât for me, youâd still be at the Foundation being deconstructed. If it werenât for me, weâd keep driving in circles until weâre dead or taken prisoner again. Believe me, Iâd rather be dead.â
âYeah?â Johnno points at me. âTell me one thing you achieved by taking that stupid drug, just one.â
I swat his finger away, and for a moment I think heâs going to swat me back. A split second later, I feel his self-control kick in, his mind closing over like a steel trap.
âYeah, block me, why donât you?â I say. âFine, but why donât you try listening to me for just five minutes?â Clenching his jaw, Johnno leans against the van. Batting away a fly, I say, âI did have hallucinations, OK? For a while I thought I was going crazy.â
He raises a tattooed eyebrow at me, as if to say no kidding. Ignoring him, I carry on. âBut towards the end, I heard a voice. A real voice. Not yours, not any of the VORTEX members. There was someone else.â
I have his attention at last. His steely gaze on mine, he says, âLike who? Greta? Melody?â
âNo.â I hesitate. âDid you ever hear Ethan talk about a friend called Rawiri?â
âThe one who designed Eternity with him?â Johnno wipes his brow. âThe news reports said heâd died, right?â
âSure, just like they said we died.
